A Shoreline Management Plan is a policy document in whch the organisations that manage the shoreline set out their long-term plan for the best ways to mangage flood and erosion risk to people and the developed, historic and nataural environment. SMPs identify opportunities where shoreline managers can work with others to make improvement.

The SMP's policies are implemented through delivery plans (such as strategies and asset management plans) and subsequently by operational projects and action s(such as schemes).
